ReCareering

If there is one benefit of aging, that word is “choice”. True, some may have caregiving responsibilities. Others may have financial obligations that don’t allow complete freedom. As sociologists tell us most people will have at least three careers in their lifetimes. The second half of life still may provide more choices.

Exploring one’s options is central to Career Services Unlimited, an organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to craft conscious life decisions. As some financial obligations ease or the challenge of one’s job fades, CSU publications and workshops offer a framework in which to explore what’s next.

More than 50% of all new businesses are started by people over 50 years of age. Franchises, consulting, and retail often fit new expectations of what work means after many years in corporate or other jobs. Flexibility, time management, new location, and reconnecting with one’s values and interests makes self-employment attractive.

“Recareering” has emerged as a trend as baby boomers come into their 50’s and seek new jobs and life roles. “I call it life design,” said Kathleen McCormack, the ReTooling© architect and class facilitator. “When I began offering ReTooling classes in Atlanta in the 80’s, people were focused on the job. Where would they work, what kind of training did they need, how would they get there. Certainly those elements are still part of a change process, but people now are also integrating lifestyle components, such as travel, interests, and volunteerism. That’s the difference in people choosing to explore possibilities for the second half of their lives.”

CSU’s V.A.L.U.E.S. workbook, “Tips for Creating Your Second Career”, and “Making it Happen” Workbook are ways to conduct your own exploration. Individual coaching and ReTooling workshops also provide support and tools to make ReCareering satisfying and successful.
